CYCLE TRAILS

Alexandra is home to a handful of New Zealand's Great Rides; the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Roxburgh Gorge Trail, the Clutha Gold Trail and the Lake Dunstan Trail.

For those more adventurous and like a challenge, there are plenty of downhill and mountain cycle tracks too!

Otago Central rail trail

You can cycle, walk or ride a horse along the 152 km length of trail from either Clyde or Middlemarch ends, or complete shorter sections as day trips.

The trail is Grade 1 as it was originally a train track, so it is mostly flat with gradual climbs in places.

Roxburgh gorge trail

This trail is one of New Zealand’s most visually spectacular day rides following the Clutha River.

You can walk or cycle the section from Alexandra to Doctor's Point and back, or from the Lake Roxburgh Hydro Dam to Shingle Creek and back.

If you are wanting to experience the whole trail, you will need to prebook a boat transfer between Doctor's Point and Shingle Creek.

CLUTHA GOLD TRAIL

This trail covers many difference landscapes of Central Otago, from the barren terrain, the wooded forests and sprawling pastures of hinterland Otago.

This is another multi day trail if you are wanting to cycle the whole trail or you are able to complete sections as day trips.

LakE Dunstan Trail

This is the newest trail in the Great Rides of New Zealand network and links the townships of Clyde and Cromwell.

It is a challenging 55km ride (Grade 2-3) through isolated but fascinating landscapes following the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers as well as Lake Dunstan.

Please note that parts of the trail are in remote terrain with some challenging grade 3 sections which are only recommended for confident and experienced cyclists.
